Geography: Porto Alegre is encircled by 72 km of the Guaíba lakeshore. It has some flat areas but is encircled by 40 hills covering 65% of its area. It has the largest rural zone of Brazilian capitals, with a significant production of fruit and vegetables.
Ethnic groups: Populated by descendents from more than 20 ethnic groups, Porto Alegre is characterized by pluralism formed mainly from Portuguese, German and Italian immigrants.
